Lately, I’ve had this thing where when I’m alone at home what I do is watch Netflix documentaries. Yea, I’m pretty sure I’ve written about how I do that before so I’m sorry for you followers who already know this. What’s a girl to do when she has no cable- Netflix, that’s really all you can do.
Last night, I was clicking through options of what to watch and it seems like there are so many things to watch about the planet and what is good for us and what is bad for us. Some seem like they might just be conspiracy theories, others seem legit and interesting to watch. I mean, I can always turn on a Ted Talk and be engulfed through every single episode.
Last night was different though, I decided to turn on “GMO OMG.” I’ve heard about GMO’s and how prevalent they are now in the United States but never really thought about how much they are harming us. I mean, the good ole FDA has given their stamp of approval on them so they must be good right? The FDA has our backs as consumers right? We should trust them with what our babies eat and what we eat right?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, you may not want to read on. You’re probably going to get pissed.
GMO’s – for those of you who do not know, are Genetically Modified Organisms. What this means is the seed that was once natural now has modified DNA which makes it repel insecticides or pesticides or a whole onslaught of other horrible chemicals so the plants can grow in a heavily doused chemical environment.
So the real question here is whether or not GMO’s actually hurt us. Monsanto did a three month long study on rats to see the affect of round up and found that there was no harm to the rats. Roundup basically protects plants from pesticide and it’s a coating that is applied to the seeds. It makes the seed blue in color. Creepy right? Also, the roundup that was tested was for corn. Most corn in the US is GMO, oh and so is Soy.
A scientist in France did the same study that Monsanto did, used the same exact mice and everything but continued the study for much longer than three months. It was only 4-6 months where the mice started developing cancerous tumors. Monsanto tried to discredit the scientist by stating that he didn’t reveal his raw data. The scientist responded, offering to reveal that data if Monsanto did. Monsanto didn’t reply and refused to be questioned.
The moral of the story here is how can we as a country allow this? GMO is in everything, cancer rates are skyrocketing and obesity is through the roof. Yet, the FDA has our back and does everything in their power to protect us. Ha! It’s all about money folks and it’s so sad.
You may be wondering, how do we protect ourselves from this? Well, you can buy all organic. Even wholefoods has GMO in their processed foods. All you can get from there is their meats and veggies that are 100% organic. It’s a sad place where we live and it literally makes me angry.
What can we do about this? I feel I may have to start some sort of a group that will fight to protect future generations. All I can do in the immediate future is be thankful that I have Young Living products that are completely natural and organic to use on my body/in my body and for my family.
Everyone should watch “GMO OMG.” Educate yourselves!
